Geothermal heating/cooling is also known as ground source heat pumps. The systems concept takes advantage of the earth’s constant temperature to heat and cool a building.
Geothermal heat pumps are similar to ordinary heat pumps but use the ground instead of they are to provide the heating and air conditioning. Geothermal heat pumps are among the most efficient and comfortable heating and cooling technologies currently available.
Closed Loop:
Ground source heat pumps work by circulating water or antifreeze solution through a closed loop of polyethylene pop that is buried in the ground
Open Loop:
Ground source heat pumps are electrically powered. During the winter, the fluid collects heat form the earth and carries it through the system into the building.
Standing Column:
During the summer, the system reverses itself to cool the building by pulling heat from the building carrying it through the system and placing it in the ground.
The Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency have both endorsed ground source heat pump systems as among the most energy efficient and environmentally friendly heating, cooling, water heating systems available.
